ABOUT ME
Mackenzie Coleman is a Toronto-based artist and illustrator who takes inspiration from all aspects of life. Whether it be influenced by beauty & fashion or rock & roll, her colourful designs are sure to catch your attention. Currently, she has been interested in using portraiture as a method of exploring themes of identity and self-care in her work.
Mackenzie's interdisciplinary practice also prioritizes the power of process and collaboration. Through experimentation and the use of mixed media, she blurs the line between design and fine art; creating illustrations that are communicative and memorable.
FAQs
How did you get into the creative field?
As an only child, I found myself people watching a lot and copying it all down in a sketchbook. It became a space for me to put my thoughts and ideas and watch them develop into something that made others smile too. I would copy my favourite DVD and album covers to make my own interpretations of them. As I got older I realized that there was potential for me to make this a career instead of a hobby and I began taking it more seriously. So here we are today, trying to make it as a freelance artist and illustrator!
What kind of work do you enjoy doing?
Although the majority of my work consists of portraits and posters, I also have experience doing some graphic design work (such as branding, logo and type design). I’m a sucker for good packaging and would love to work with favourite brands to create something that could be seen by millions. One of my favourite projects so far has been working with Toronto band ‘The Banger Hearts’ to create the cover for their first album release of ‘Books on Tape’.
What is the Fuelled by Coffee Collective (FBC)?
FBC is a collective created by myself and 3 fellow illustrators. We found ourselves looking for a sense of friendship and community in a competitive industry. So, FBC became a place for us to collaborate, eat good food and provide a safe space for critique and discussion.
